I painted illustrations inspired by the story, Up and Away, by Blake Kimzey, which is being published as a hand made book by Rust Belt Bindery out of Moorhead, MN. I am truly excited about this first edition printing of 75 and hope to collaborate with them more in the future.

This was a collaboration I did over Thanksgiving with my husband, Blake. He painted a cornucopia underneath during our family art lesson and I added my own flair on top! I guess this is the last official one, yea! Although I didn't finish these "officially" by the time I was 30, it was really fun to do.

To celebrate my 30th birthday, I thought I'd do something extreme. Since I don't have the funds (or the foresight) to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro, I thought I'd paint a gauche painting every day starting October 18 until November 17, when I turn 30. So, I'll have 29 paintings to tie up the last days of my twenties.

Heather Bowling curated some of my smaller works at her house in Alexandria, VA. She included small paintings, watercolors, and colored pencil drawings from the last two years.

I was happy to see Marc and Andrew become the new proud owners of "Judie and Burke." Here they are with it already gracing their walls!

In late April, Zoe Hawk, Meredith Lynn, Chris Reno and I held our M.A. show, "First Degree Burns," at the Drewelowe Gallery in Iowa City. Joyce Ho is another second year painter with us and her work was there in spirit.

A small installation of two collections I have; my mom's glasses and my baby shoes. My installation class put together a show of our own "curio cabinets" so this was my piece. Through all the moving I've done and will do, I've gotten rid of a lot of mementos, but will never relinquish these particular things.

Transplant

After living here two years, I think I'm ready. They say anything grows in Iowa so I've got luck on my side. My friend Heidi Casto and I are diving in and making a garden in my backyard. While digging out the grass, though, it felt like a good opportunity to play around and do what you aren't allowed to when you have a serious yard. I transplanted the uprooted grass from the "bed" into the new "bed" and tried to create a connection between what will be the "controlled" garden to the jungle that is the ravine behind our duplex. I was also thinking about transplanting perfectly good grass for better plants, and the scraping/digging/covering I like to do in my paintings, playing off the shapes I already had and creating new ones with wood from "my kit." I'll update with better pictures as they come, and once this rain stops, we'll be able to plant and then the REAL fun will begin!

Hospital Mural!

A group of us collaborated with people at the University of Iowa Hospital. We had anybody with time and the desire to make a drawing about what brings them hope. Then we made paintings based off of their drawings, collected them into a mural, and now it's hanging for all to see, at the Hospital!!

Dropseed Memory Project

In November, a few artists and I teamed up with a writing group at the Senior Center in Iowa City to collaborate for the Dropseed Memory Project. Each writer would write a story based on their favorite memory and then each artist would make a work of art inspired by that story. My partner, Fran, wrote a story about a cantankerous rooster that pecked at her younger sister only to be punished by being flung in the air by their father. It was a hilarious story and really gave me great insight into growing up on a farm in Iowa, something I am gradually learning more and more about.

My sister, Marielle, lives in Berlin and allowed me to draw on her apartment wall when I went to visit her this summer. I drew a view of our old living room in colored pencil on the exposed part of the wall of her current living room. Now she has both living rooms to live in.

Last September, my high school, Trinity Christian Academy, held an Alumni Art Auction to benefit the Springs of Hope Orphanage in Machakos, Kenya. I donated the following three pieces, each 12 x 12 inches, oil and acrylic on wood panels. The first two were inspired from drawings I made while driving from Iowa to Seattle and camping along the way this past summer.

Recycle Good Times!!

As a culminating project for the Iowa City Summer Arts Residency I created a "recycling center" for good times. People could put a joke or a good story into the recycling machine and receive a new one for their efforts. In this economy, we have to conserve our best resources and can't let humor go to waste!!!

Nicole Donnelly organized the Scavenger Hunt for Art which brought Iowa City more fun than when the Mormons trekked through!
